Short summary of activities and expertise | In 2020, I obtained a PhD degree in Russian Literature in Tartu University (supervisor Roman Leibov). Theme of the thesis was “The Issue of Real Recipient of a Fiction: Contemporary Reader Practices’ Analysis”. The focus of this research is new online reading practices, including readers’ reviews, and the formation of a reading community. Main research interests: sociology of literature, book market research, reading practices, anthropology of reading. While working on my thesis, I started collecting a database on contemporary Russian reading and popular literature. Now I intend to continue this work, not only with the collection of data, but also with the description of new communities that are emerging based on Russian reading culture. At November 2021, I have taken a part in a panel on ASEEES with a paper “Read-Along: Did Bad Books Make Some Benefits?” My main project observes relatively new phenomena in the Russian-speaking internet: collective readings of some poorly written fictional texts. I’ll try to consider this phenomenon in the methodological frames of affinity space [Gee 2004], that is, a self-conducted online or offline place based on a common endeavor and not having a stable hierarchy (or any at all). In my project, I will make an effort to add some aspects to this important concept, using the phenomenon of read-along as an example of affinity space. I am trying not to limit myself with analysis of readers’ demands and desires, but intend to deal with this phenomenon as a group activity comparable with traditional book clubs. This year I intend to continue monitoring and collecting a database on reading in times of crisis, the first data from major messengers and public groups has already been received. I am also going to use a previously collected database of popular reading in Russia, some of which was included in my dissertation. |
