Short summary of activities and expertiseFaculty of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science University of Bielsko-Biala has more than half a century of history and is the leading scientific and educational center in the southwestern part of Poland. The faculty has full academic rights (the only one in Bielsko-Biala), where you can get doctoral and postdoctoral degrees, as well as apply for the title of professor. Highly qualified scientific and pedagogical staff, supported by engineering and administrative staff, as well as well-equipped laboratories ensure high quality education in all specialties. The Department of Computer Science and Automatic is one of the most advanced research centers in Polish technical universities, having long scientific contacts and research cooperation with centers in Poland and abroad. In addition to the Erasmus / Socrates program, the faculty cooperates with various research centers, incl. Volkswagen and the FCA group. Main directions of research: Information Technology Security; Internet of Things; Networks: optical and radio networks, wireless sensor networks and their security; IT systems; Parallel computing; Computer vision; Electro-magnetic compatibility; Electronics. The most promising area of research is new computer security technologies that combine the latest achievements in cryptography, artificial intelligence, multimedia forensics and steganography.
Role and profile of key persons (incl. supervisor)Prof., DSc, PhD, Eng. Mikolaj Karpinski (supervisor), Head of the Department of Computer Science and Automatics. He will provide supervising/mentoring experience for the POLONEZ BIS fellow. His research activity focuses on computer systems, especially their security, in particular cryptographic methods of information defense. ORCID: 0000-0002-8846-332X, Researcher ID: R-4116-2017. He has published more than 300 scientific papers, including monographs, scientific articles, patents for inventions, reports at international scientific conferences and symposiums. Including he published about 100 scientific papers in highly-rated peer-reviewed scientific publications. Mikolaj Karpinski is a recognized expert in the field of computer security, cryptography and steganography, he is a member of the editorial boards of several international peer-reviewed journals and conferences. Currently Mikolaj Karpinski is the leader and coordinator of several international research programs and projects related to scientific research: Security of information technologies; Computer systems and wireless sensor networks; Computer engineering; Electrical engineering; Industrial electronics; Research of telecommunication networks and systems. Ruslan Shevchuk received higher education and Ph.D. He will be an administrative assistant for the POLONEZ BIS fellow to successfully manage the project. Currently he is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Automatics of the University of Bielsko-Biala, Poland. Developer and lecturer of advanced training courses in the field of cyber security for IT companies, educational institutions, and government institutions. His research interests include information security, cryptographic transformations, cyber-physical systems, intelligent personal assistants. ORCID: 0000-0001-5381-9528, Researcher ID: G-5668-2017.
Previous and current involvement in research and training programmesThe University cooperates with many academic centers and research institutes all over the world. The number of bilateral agreements is growing exponentially each year – up to now, we have signed over 100 agreements in the Erasmus+ program, which was created to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. Additionally, we have signed approximately 50 bilateral agreements covering scientific and educational cooperation with foreign partners. We participate in Erasmus/Socrates programs and cooperate with various research centers, incl. Volkswagen and the FCA group. We have currently several grants, including scientific project No POIR.04.01.04-00-0048/20-00 "Monitoring and event analysis system to improve safety at category D railway crossings and identify compliance with current traffic regulations" (project acronym: POIR) (Funding: the National Centre for Research and Development, Poland) and educational grant No 2020-1-PL01-KA203-082197 ” Innovations for Big Data in a Real World” (grant acronym: iBigData – Innovations) (Funding: European Commission - National Agency - Foundation for the Development of the Education System) in our group and have large experience in successful applications for funding in Poland and EU.

Key research facilities, infrastructure, and equipmentAn important element of the University's development process is the implementation of the Knowledge Education Development Operational Program for the project "Academy of the Future - Comprehensive Development Program of the University of Technology and Humanities in Bielsko-Biała" (PLN 2.2 million co-financing from European Funds). The implementation of the project contribute to: introducing new and modifying the implemented research and education programs adapted to the labor market needs, gaining additional competences enabling better practical professional preparation of students, increasing - substantive and related to the methods and techniques of didactic classes - the competences of the teaching staff as well as the quality and efficiency of work management and administrative staff, introducing modern IT solutions and tools in the field of university management. The project provides support for activities that allow the development of: faculty- and student skills for which the demand is reported by employers (professional) and enabling flexible adjustment to the labor market (the so-called soft), in particular in those areas that are crucial for the development of the modern economy of the country, research and didactic competences of academic teachers, qualifications of management and administrative staff.

Key research facilities, infrastructure, and equipmentThe University of Bielsko-Biala is located in the beautiful city of Bielsko-Biala that is surrounded by mountainous landscape. The city is abundant in stunning Art Nouveau architecture and is often referred to as Little Vienna. It is also a faculty- and student-friendly city with enjoyable nightlife, which is rich in both historical and natural sights. At present, about 5,000 students are studying at five faculties: Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science; Faculty of Materials, Civil and Environmental Engineering; Faculty of Management and Transport; Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Faculty of Health Sciences. The university employs about 400 people, including 200 experienced professors and other academic staff.
Intersectoral secondments options We have long-term scientific contacts and research cooperation with research centers in Poland and abroad. In addition to the Erasmus/Socrates program, we cooperate with various research centers, incl. Volkswagen and the FCA group. The University of Bielsko-Biala is open to new ideas and opportunities which can be utilized to improve modern research and educational tools. Internationalization has become the most important objective of the University, with it being constantly promoted through participation in various European network projects. We would like to develop international cooperation with leading European universities, research groups and stakeholders. In particular, we are interested in advanced developments in the field of computer science security, lying at the intersection of cryptography, artificial intelligence, computer forensics and steganography. We are looking for experienced researchers who can lead individual areas of research, leading scientists, to captivate graduate and undergraduate students in the field of computer science and cybersecurity.
