Short summary of activities and expertise | The goal of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Ethics (INCET) at the Jagiellonian University is to encourage and support research activities in philosophy and ethics, in particular research on the classic bioethical dilemmas (e.g. reproductive or end-of-life decisions, organ transplantation, resource allocation, clinical decision making) and on topics that emerge from recent technological, social, and scientific developments (e.g. genetic engineering, human enhancement, new healthcare and reproductive technologies, infectious diseases, evidence based medicine, preventive medicine, big data, artificial intelligence, algorithmic decision-making, regulating scientific research, climate change, military conflicts, migration and multiculturalism). Although our research interests are diversified we focus on problems that bridge the gap between philosophy and practice. We use an interdisciplinary approach to deal with philosophical problems in practical contexts: both "armchair" methods typical for the humanities and social sciences (conceptual analysis, case studies), as well as empirical methods (behavioral experiments, corpus analysis, topic modelling). |
Role and profile of key persons (incl. supervisor) | The Interdisciplinary Centre for Ethics is headed by Prof. Tomasz Żuradzki who is an associate professor at the Institute of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland. He studied political science and philosophy at the Jagiellonian University and at the London School of Economics (MSc in 2006), received a PhD in philosophy in 2011, and a habilitation in 2020. His recent work focuses on the intersection of metaethics and practical ethics, he is a member of the editorial board of the journal Diametros, the editor-in-chief of the popular science journal Filozofia w Praktyce [Philosophy in Practice], and the Principal Investigator of the project BIOUNCERTAINTY funded by the ERC Starting Grant. |

Key research facilities, infrastructure, and equipment | The Jagiellonian University is one of the oldest universities in Europe (established in 1364) and now one of the best two universities in Poland. INCET employees have different backgrounds but with a common interest in philosophy (while the majority of us are philosophers, some of us are also lawyers, psychologists, economists, and physicians) that are passionate about their research. We cooperate in research and writing articles, comment on each other’s work, learn and master new skills. We all meet at the INCET weekly research seminar and other research events. The talks are given either by a member of our team or invite guests from other leading philosophy research centers. See our team: https://incet.uj.edu.pl/en_GB/zespol |
Intersectoral secondments options | We cooperate with the Institute of Philosophy, Institute of Psychology, and Department of Philosophy and Bioethics at the Jagiellonian University Medical College. |
Other benefits | The Jagiellonian University in Kraków offers an engaging academic and cultural life. The city itself is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Central Europe and offers many opportunities for spending leisure time. All in all, working at INCET can be an intellectual adventure and a boost to your career. |
Candidate sought | All topics within ethics, bioethics, political philosophy, philosophy of biomedical and social sciences are welcome. In particular, we encourage interdisciplinary applications that bridge the gap between philosophy and current challenges (e.g. genetic engineering, human enhancement, healthcare and reproductive technologies, infectious diseases, climate change, military conflicts, artificial intelligence (AI), migration and multiculturalism, big data, etc.). |
