POLONEZ BIS Fellows share their research with the public

An exhibition at the Louvre, radio programs, interviews about life in Poland, podcasts or even a cartoon – these are just a few examples of the creative outreach activities carried out by POLONEZ BIS Fellows.

Throughout the funding period, POLONEZ BIS Fellows are required to share their research findings with audiences who might not otherwise have access to them. This is achieved through at least two outreach activities organized by each Fellow. They should promote public awareness and understanding of science e.g. by public talks or discussions, visiting primary and secondary schools, conducting workshops, participating in science fairs and festivals, making science resources and programs accessible to the general public.

With many POLONEZ BIS projects approaching their final stage – and some already completed – we have a growing number of inspiring outreach activities that highlight the results of the projects. Below, you’ll find examples of successful communication activities POLONEZ BIS Fellows have already carried out.

Exhibitions

An exhibition might not be the most conventional way to showcase the results of a scientific project, but in the case of Dr. Karel Innemée’s research, it proved to be an ideal choice. One of the project’s most striking outcomes was the reconstruction of several costumes from medieval Christian Nubia. These reconstructions were presented at the Louvre Museum under the patronage of UNESCO, earning widespread media attention both in Poland and internationally.

Another exhibition  showcased the results of Dr. Orest Semotiuk’s project on “Russian aggression in Ukraine in political cartoons and memes”:

Podcasts and radio programs

Over the last decade podcasting has gained massive popularity and has become a mainstream medium. There are countless science podcasts, and many universities have launched their own series. Our Fellows, Dr. Anton Dinerstein and Dr. Christoph Merdes, created their own podcasts, while Dr. El Sayed Ali and Dr. José M.F. Ferreira appeared as guests on the podcast series of their host institutions.

Videos, presentations, cartoons

Videos were another effective way to share the results of scientific projects with a broader audience. Dr. Noemie Combe created a video presentation on the Mayan calendar, Dr. Younes Noutfia produced animated cartoons explaining a novel approach to assessing date fruit, and Dr. Milan Chroust discussed his research on turtles using Facebook Shorts videos.

In addition, the National Science Centre created a short documentary series featuring the research of Dr. Mária Babinčáková, Dr. Nicolas De Pelsmaeker, and Dr. Michael Lintner.

Press releases and interviews

POLONEZ BIS Fellows were frequently featured in a range of online media outlets. They shared press releases about their scientific discoveries with mainstream media, while also giving interviews on platforms affiliated with their host institutions to talk about their experiences living and working in Poland.

POLONEZ BIS Blog

Last but not least, in collaboration with our partner, the Polish Women Scientists Network, we launched a blog that allows Fellows to share information about their research in a more informal setting: www.polonezbis.pl. The blog is open to Fellows who wish to use this platform to connect with a general audience.
